How to Boost Your Natural Sunscreen

May 29, 2008 by Carolin · 2 Comments

Today there is an alert about toxic substances in sunscreen in the local newspaper. 18 products were tested and every single one of them

Woman enjoying the sun

contained one or more substances that are harmful to the environment. 5 of the products, several with focus on children, contained substances that are illegal as UV-filters.

Does it matter if we use creams that are harmful to the environment?

The toxins are rinsed off us and are accumulated in lakes, drinking water, and later in fish and animals that we eat.
As if that is not enough, consider this: Do you want to cover your skin with toxic substances?

There is a lot of talk about how important vitamin D is. So we know that we need to be in the sun and we also know that most are bad for us. But what most people don’t know is that there are many natural healthy foods which protect us against sunburn.

  • The well known carotenoid beta-carotene protects you skin from sunburn by giving it a darker tint.
  • Studies have shown that vitamin E gives us the possibility to stay longer in the sun without sunburn.
  • The two yellow carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin work like a wrinkle cream and makes your skin more elastic and less dry. On top of this it makes you less likely to burn.
  • The red cartenoid lycopene also protects your skin against sunburn. A test group was given 40 grams of tomato paste with olive oil for a period of 10 weeks. When their skin was tested on UV radiation it showed that the group taking lycopene become 40% less sunburns than the group taking only olive oil,
  • Omega-3 has a double effect on your skin. It raises you skin’s natural UV protection and protects you skin against inflammation if you do get too much sun. In other words omega-3 is sunscreen and after sun in one.

So there are many healthy foods that boost your natural . Here is the complete list that gives you all the great substances above:

  1. Carrots
  2. Fresh vegetables
  3. Whole grains
  4. Raw nuts
  5. Green leafy vegetables
  6. Tomatoes (both fresh and cooked)
  7. Oily cold-water fish

With these foods you can enjoy the sun and make sure you get enough vitamin D without worrying about sunburn.

How To Get Vitamin D During Winter

September 24, 2007 by Carolin · Leave a Comment

The news, the papers, internet. Wherever I look there are reports on the importance of . The report state that deficiency of vitamin D causes cancer, heart disease, diabetes, MS and tuberculosis.

All you need is 10-15 minutes of sun shine on 40% of your skin per day. This might be really easy during summer. But how do you get enough during winter?

One god thing is that vitamin D is fat soluble which means that it stays in you body. And you don’t have to get up to your daily doses every single day. But still during cold weather it is almost impossible to get enough just from sun shine.

So what are the alternatives?
Cold water fatty fish such as Salmon, Mackerel and Herring is the best alternative.

Liver, eggs and milk also contain vitamin D though less than fish.

Not enough sun shine and don’t eat enough fish. Do like me and supplement on . Enzymatic’s Eskimo-3 105Sg is natural, stable and of great quality.

Warning: Flue season is almost here. Boost your immune system now!

September 12, 2007 by Carolin · Leave a Comment

Fall is just around the corner.

My kids have started school again. We all know it won’t be long before the first flu turns up.

It’s definitely time to start boosting your immune system.

So what do you need to get you through the flue season?

  • Stimulate blood circulation and the lymphatic system to remove waste
  • Foods that stimulate immune system
  • Foods natural antibiotic properties

Here are the top foods you need to survive this winter.

Garlic: Studies have shown that garlic is the most effective natural cold/flue remedy. Add it to your food every day or supplement. Garlic has many, many health benefits and one is that it stimulates blood circulation.

Echinacea is a well known for its stimulating effects on the immune system. Have a small bottle at home and use if you feel you might have caught something.

Vitamin C will increase your energy and boost your immune system. Many studies show that vitamin C has best effect on professional athletes. But I can’t help wonder how much they take? The RDA recommended 60mg/day. Or the 1000mg/day that more and more doctors are recommending. 60 mg/day is really only just enough to avoid scurvy .Personally I’ve had very good use of vitamin C. I take 1000 mg a day during the “flue season”.

Omega-3 is crucial for a well functioning immune system. Something no one can do without. But make sure you buy a product of good quality since fish oil can become rancid.

Honey strengthens immune system and has antibiotic properties. Use in you food but don’t heat it. Honey is a great bread spread. If you feel you are coming down with something drink fresh lemon juice with lost of honey.

Ginger and cayenne pepper stimulates blood circulation. Use then to in your food and make hot ginger tea.

Water is essential for you body to remove waste products. Drink 8 glasses of water a day. If you feel you’re about to come down with something drink even more water. Think of it as “flushing out” the germs with water.

I’ve had no flue and only 1 cold in 4 years and then I was 7 months pregnant and moving house. Apparently that was just a bit too much for me. But other than that these anti cold/flue remedies really work. Not just for me but for my whole family.

36% lower risk of dying in heart disease

August 31, 2007 by Carolin · Leave a Comment

Recent American studies have shown that people who eat fish 1-2 times per week have 36%  lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. It is mainly cold water oily fish (salmon, mackerel, haring) that has this effect.

What is so special about cold water oily fish?

Omega-3

The omega-3 fatty acids are essential which means that we can not live without them. And we have to add them through our food.

The amount of omega-3 fats in our diets have dropped to almost nothing while the omega-6 fats are constantly increasing. This can have dramatic effects on our health. Omega-3 is rightly called brain food but the positive health effects of omega-3 is much more wide spread that that. Since the omega-3 fatty acids effect the cells throughout the whole body deficiency of omega-3 can cause a vast number of health problems.

The brain revolution

About 150000 years ago our ancestors the homo sapiens made a gigantic leap in development. Their babies became fatter with the right type of fat; this provided fuel for the brain and was the key to a large human brain. The fattest infants became mentally the fittest adults. The fats in this brain food came from fish in Rift Valley, East Africa. Fish that was full of .

The general symptoms of omega-3 deficiency are:
• Thirst
• Dry skin
• Dry hair
• Brittle nails
• Dry elbows
• Dandruff
• Hair loss

Omega-3 is a natural vasodilator and it inhibits inflammation in the body. It works together with the inflammatory omega-6 and the balance between them is crucial. As a vasodilator it makes the blood vessels bigger, smoother and more flexible allowing the blood to flow more smoothly this in turn lowers blood pressure.

Taking omega-3 daily can help:

  • Improve your immune system
  • Remove eczema
  • Moisture dry skin
  • Minimize risk of ear, throat and lung infections
  • Prevent migraine
  • Prevent cardiovascular disease
  • Lower bad cholesterol
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Cure menstrual pains
  • Minimize risk of premature birth
  • Help you loose weight by increasing your metabolism and give you a full feeling.
  • Optimize bone density and minimize the risk of osteoporosis
  • Treating inflammatory autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lower risk of degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis
  • Protect eyesight in elderly by reducing the risk of macular degeneration
  • Help children develop healthy brain texture

Sources of omega-3

There are a number of different omega-3 acids.
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) can be found in a number of vegetable oils, dark green vegetable and flaxseeds.
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are more potent than ALA. These can be found in cold water oily fish and algae.

Omega-3 as supplement

I try to eat cold water oily fish once a week but I don’t always succeed. And even if I manage, I know that once a week is not enough to balance the omega-3 and omega-6 in my diet. So Omega-3 is one of the few supplements I use.

If you are going to supplement omega-3 it is a natural choice to use the most potent omega-3 fatty acids in other words the omega-3 found in cold water oily fish. There are so many different fish oils out there so make sure you use one of high quality. Otherwise you might miss out on the health benefits. The most expensive supplement you can buy is one that does not work.

Since omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fat it has a big tendency to become rancid. This can happen in the bottle or even inside your body. High quality stable fish oil will stay fresh much longer. It has a smooth taste and it needs no aromas or sweeteners. If you use capsules bite through one to taste the oil. Bad taste – bad oil.

As with all food we should try to eat it as much as possible as nature intended it.
Unfortunately our seas are becoming more and more contaminated with environmental toxins and heavy metals and it is of course crucial that the fish oil you use has been purified.

I have found a fish oil that really gives you all the benefits of omega-3 should be natural, purified and stable. It called Eskimo-3:  Enzymatic’s Eskimo-3 105Sg . Now that I have found this Eskimo-3 fish oil I’m not changing back to other brands.
