Male Dominance: Sending Messages to Your Kids

Yesterday, a friend sent me this video. And it got me thinking.
The statistics that Jackson Katz are showing are horrifying.
But it is good and it makes me think of what a big responsibility we have as parents raising our sons and daughters. It’s not only about how we treat our children but how we, the parents, the role models, treat each other and everyone around us.

UK to Ban Food Colors - They are Bad for Our Kids
September 11, 2008 by Carolin · Leave a Comment
UK is leading the way.
In April this year the discussions skyrocketed when researchers estimated that 30% of cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) would be prevented if companies removed the colors used in vast global additives industry.
Consumer power has won.

Normally I’m not too impressed with our food administrations.
How come the red food color amaranth is bad for Americans but perfectly ok for Europeans?
Well, I’m currently in India and I’m pretty sure there are very few rules on what chemicals are added to the food here. There are no traffic rules that anyone cares about so why should there be rules regulating food.
Most of the food is of course real whole food with fantastic taste. But what about the bread I buy in the super market. Or the sweets my children ask for that almost glow in the dark from their strong colors.
My kids are 4 and 5. Should I tell them they cannot have any sandwiches or sweets during the 6 weeks we’re here in India?
I can’t do that. As many young children they are very picky about their food and it was not their choice to go here.
Instead I let them eat sandwiches and some occasional candy and I in between stuff them with fresh fruits and vegetables. At the same time I’m really glad that there are administrative functions regulating what is added to the food back home.

10 ways to get in shape with your kids
I have 3 young kids and I know what it’s like to try to combine taking care of them with taking care of myself. For some reason they always come before me. This leaves me very little time to, for example, exercise.
I thought a lot about what to do about my basically non-existing fitness schedule. And I’ve found that the best way to handle the problem to find fitness activities that I can do together with my children. This will help me get in shape and it will benefit them as well by:
- Keeping them active
- Showing them that exercise is an important part of life
Kids love to spend time with their parents. In our house it can be a pain to get the kids of the couch and away from their precious video games. But I found a couple of words that do magic and they are:
Anyone who wants to go out and jump on the trampoline with me?
It is not the trampoline itself that is so much fun, it is the fact that we do it together. And it’s a great and fun way to exercise. I love it.
Here are some ideas on activities that both you and your kids will benefit from:
- You run and your kid bikes
- Play soccer together in the garden
- Put on some fun music and dance
- Get a Nintendo Wii or use a dance pad and play active fun games together
- Go to the swimming pool together once a week
- Go to a parent-child class of eg gymnastics
- Join them when the play at the playground
- Get an exercise DVD and 2 balance balls (one for you and one for your child) and exercise while you kid plays with the ball
- Get up the trampoline and have fun together
- Do active family activities like roller skating, ice skating, bowling, cycling and skiing
Kids love to play, climb, run and use their bodies. Why do we as parents sit on the bench and just watch? Playing with your kids is not just a good way to exercise it is also a great opportunity to learn something new. So instead of thinking of it as you taking care of your children think of it as what it really is:
A great opportunity for you and your child to have fun and get exercise.
