2. Promote good oral hygiene
- Chewing gum allows saliva to flow and flush away bacteria that can cause tooth decay, gum diseases and bad breath.
- It helps in neutralizing acids in the mouth that also cause tooth decay.
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, chewing gum containing xylitol for at least five minutes after every meal can reduce levels of bacteria that are known to cause tooth decay.
3. Reduce tension and anxiety
- Chewing gum helps release nervous energy according to Wrigley Science Institute. In fact, soldiers during World War I were given chewing gum to reduce their levels of stress while on combat.

- The reason why chewing gum may improve memory is unknown. However, British psychologist conducted a study and the result was persons chewing gum during the test showed better short and long memory test scores than when they didn’t.
In addition, chewing gum has been proven to be an effective displacement activity for people who want to stop smoking.
Although chewing gum may indeed be beneficial to our health, its contents, xylitol and sorbitol may cause flatulence and diarrhea, especially to sensitive people. Because of this, it is advised that chewing gum on a daily basis be put in moderation.
