Ketchup or ketchup. Ingredients matters

By Carolin

heinz ketchupIt’s funny how your focus can change.

At first I sugar was the enemy now I have to prioritize high fructose corn syrup.
I don’t think that my children will get seriously ill from a little bit of high fructose corn syrup but I don’t want it in their, or my, regular food i.e. cereal and ketchup.
I always turn a new product around a read the ingredients list and often it just makes me tired. It is so hard to find regular food with reasonable ingredients. That’s why I find I absolutely worth while to visit stores Trader Joe’s.
Here is a comparison of the ingredients list of the beloved Heinz ketchup and Trade Joes Organic ketchup:

Heinz Tomato Ketchup Trader Joe’s Organic Ketchup
Tomato concentrate Organic tomato puree
Distilled vinegar Organic sugar
High fructose corn syrup Organic white vinegar
Corn syrup Organic onion powder
Salt Organic spices
Spice
Onion flavor
Natural flavor
There it is again, high fructose corn syrup..ketchup toddler
And ingredients list of Trader Joe’s ketchup is much “cleaner” it sounds like the ingredients I would use to make a tomato sauce in my own kitchen. I appreciate every product that does not need flavoring, natural or artificial, I just don’t like it.

On top of this Heinz ketchup contains twice as much sugar.

I just stopped by StopHFCS.com and found this great recipe for HFCS free chocolate syrup in the forum. Syrup is one of the worst things you can buy when it comes to high fructose corn syrup. Some of them have HFCS as the first and major ingredient.

And this recipe sound really easy.

“Better than Hershey’s” Chocolate Syrup
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Mix sugar, cocoa, salt, and water in a large saucepan. Heat until boiling, stirring constanly until everything dissolves. Remove from heat, and add vanilla.
