healthy child with grandfatherUK is leading the way.

In April this year the discussions skyrocketed when researchers estimated that 30% of cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder () would be prevented if companies removed the colors used in vast global additives industry.

Consumer power has won.

6 are in the process of being removed from all food in the UK.

The colors are:

  1. Tartrazine E102
  2. Quinoline Yellow E104
  3. Sunset Yellow E110
  4. Carmoisine E122
  5. Ponceau Red E124
  6. Allura Red E129

The EU has a more careful strategy. By the end of 2009 products containing any of these 6 will carry a warning.

I wish that EU would dare to make a tougher decision but on the other hand the warning will probably be enough for the manufacturers to choose other ingredients.

Who will want to buy a product that says: “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children”

The same thing happened with genetically modified food (GMO) food. EU did not ban the food, they just decided that the food had to be labeled. Result: There is very little GMO food on the EU market today.

In Australia the Kids First Campaign will demand that Australia’s food regulator follows the UK’s lead by placing consumers first and banning the six additives.

In New Zealand the FSANZ Ministerial Council
have agreed to put this issue on their agenda for
October. Join the other 4000 that signed a pietition to support the cause.
