From hopelessly pale to healthy tanned with natural sun tanning

July 26, 2007 by Carolin · 3 Comments

Yesterday I wrote about vitamin D and why it is so important. So today I’ll continue on how to get a healthy intake through sunshine.

A healthy sun tan is one you get without sunscreen and without sunburn.

And it’s surprisingly easy.

Let’s start with how I know this works.
I am blond, I’ve got blue eyes and I used to burn if I spent more than 1 hour in the sun without sunscreen. As a result I was always really pale. Well not always, I sometimes got a lovely pink sunburn on certain parts of my body. My sunburnt skin then peeled off which made me look like a white/pink leopard. I went through all this only to return to my regular white.
I used enormous amounts of sunscreen and after sun.

When I started learning more and more about health I stopped buying lotions including sunscreen. Now I simply had to learn to sunbathe the natural way.
The result is fantastic. Today I’m . I get a healthy tan that stays for a long time. I don’t even get ghost-white anymore during winter. And best of all, I don’t need to worry about the sun anymore. It’s there, I go out and I tan. That’s it!

How I do it

  1. Look at your skin: The trick is to expose your skin without sun protection for just as long as your skin can take it. This time will be different for each person. It will even vary for different parts of your body. I for example have to cover the skin under my eyes and my chest long before the rest of the body reacts. Expose you skin to the sun until it starts to react on the sunshine, maybe until it becomes a little bit pink. The time that you can expose your skin to the sun will get longer as your tan gets deeper.
  2. Regular exposure: The more often you expose you skin to the sun the faster you will tan. If possible say in the sun of 15 min or so everyday and you will maintain your tan as well as get your daily dose of .
  3. Foods that help you tan: When you tan you need extra antioxidants to protect you skin from premature aging. Beta carotene turns into the antioxidant vitamin-A in the body. Carrots are rich in beta carotene and they also contain natural orange color that will make your tan look deeper. Another carotenoid is lycopene which is very powerful antioxidant. Tomatoes are especially rich in lycopene. Heat up these vegetables and the vitamin will become even better absorbed in the body.
  4. Protection: When your skin has had enough sunshine the best thing you can do is to get out of the sun or cover your skin. A hat will protect your face. Over sized sunglasses will protect the sensitive skin under your eyes. Clothes protect your body. For children or extra sensitive skin use sun protective clothing.
  5. First aid when it goes wrong: If you get a sunburn gel is a great, gentle and effective product that will help the skin recover fast.

The Basics About Vitamin D

July 24, 2007 by Carolin · Leave a Comment

, often called the sunshine vitamin,  is responsible for the body’s absorption of calcium.

This gives an indispensable role in building and maintaining strong and healthy bones and teeth.

Deficiency of can cause serious bone cause problems such as osteoporosis in adults and rickets in children.

Recent research has shown that can help prevent:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Psoriasis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

Recommended daily intake for an adult is 1000 IU (international units) and the certified safe limit is 2000 IU.

The best most natural source of the vitamin is sunshine, most experts say the 10 to 15 minutes a day on your face and arms is enough.

Other natural sources are:

  • Milk
  • Tuna
  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Sardines

Supplementing ?

If you decide to do this you have to be careful. is fat-soluble which means that what is not used by the body is stored. Eventually the stored can build up to toxic levels. Symptoms of too much are:

  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fragile bones
  • Calcium deposits throughout the body

and cancer

The absolute best way to get is sunshine. This of course puts us in a dilemma since we have been taught than sunshine gives us skin cancer and lately that sun protective lotions also gives us skin cancer.

A couple of months ago Dr Mercola presented a graph showing the number of deaths in cancer related to the latitude.

The number of deaths more than doubled at latitude 50 compared to the equator. Latitude 30 crosses the US-Mexican border, the Middle East and north of India. And on the other side south of Australia and South Africa.

So for anyone living north or south of those lines sufficient sunshine is definitely something to consider. Maybe we should see sunshine as a natural cure for cancer. Pretty depressing for me who currently lives just below latitude 60.

For all of us who are not luck to live just around the equator and to make matter worse, spend a lot of time indoors is important. And we have to learn to manage our daily intake.

Why I Started To Use Fluoridated Toothpaste Again

July 23, 2007 by Carolin · 3 Comments

Fluoride is accumulated in our bodies and it is toxic and can cause for example softened bones.

I’ve always had healthy teeth. My dentist once advised me to stop my dental insurance and just come on a check up once every 2 years.
Anyway, a while ago I had a real top diet period. My diet contained almost nothing except fresh fruits, vegetables and water. My intake of refined sugar was next to nothing.
So consider this. I had , no problems with tooth decay, and I ate no sugar.
During this period I decided to use non fluoridated toothpaste.

The result:
Well after only a couple of months I started to feel my teeth, the beginning of tooth decay. Stubborn as I am, I stuck with my new habits and started to brush me teeth one extra time after lunch. Now I brushed my teeth 3 times a day, wouldn’t that be enough?

To my disappointment it was not. And I was forced to buy natural toothpaste with fluoride.
One week after I was back to fluoride toothpaste my symptoms of tooth decay were gone.

What is fluorosis?

Fluorosis is when the level of fluoride in our bodies gets to high. Flourosis causes for example softened bones. Children are especially vulnerable since they are small.

Symptoms of fluorosis are:

  • Chalky white teeth patches
  • Yellow stained teeth
  • Brown stained teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Weak teeth

How to avoid fluorosis AND tooth decay

  • Read the ingredients on your tooth paste, aim for natural ingredients and absolutely no laureate sulfates
  • Don’t use more toothpaste than needed
  • Don’t swallow toothpaste
  • Rinse you moth after brushing
  • Take time to brush your teeth
  • Avoid sugar

This works great for me and has done so for years. Your teeth are important so take good care of them.

Healthy Recipe; None Fattening Bacon Pie

July 21, 2007 by Carolin · Leave a Comment

If you like to eat healthy bacon is probably not the first food you think about.

But in this recipe I use the bacon as a spice instead of as the main ingredient. Since I’ve excluded all the fat cheese you actually end up with a great tasting none fattening bacon pie.

This recipe is includes no dairy products.

Ingredients:

1,3 cups (3 dl) chopped spinach
1 chopped leek
3 fresh garlic cloves finely chopped
0.2 lb (100 grams) bacon
1,3 cups (3dl) whole spelt flour
½ cup (1dl) olive oil
salt
2 eggs
1 cup (2,5dl) rice or oats milk
cayenne pepper

1. Put the oven on 390 F or 200 ºC

2. Gently fry spinach, leek and garlic together until soft. In a separate frying pan fry bacon chopped in small pieces until it starts to become crunchy. Let the crunchy bacon rest on a kitchen paper to remove excess fat.

3. Start with the crust. Put spelt flour and some salt in a bowl and stir with a spoon. Add olive oil and continue to stir. Fit into a pie plate. Bake in oven for 10 minutes.

4. Beat the eggs in a large bowl. Add rice or oats milk and a dash of cayenne pepper.

5. Spoon the spinach/leek mixture into the prepared pie crust. Add bacon on top. Then pour over the egg mixture. (You can stop here and keep the pie in the fridge or freezer for later use)

6. Bake in oven until the top is golden brown, and an inserted tooth pick comes out clean, about 50 minutes.

Serve the pie with fresh vegetables.

Everybody loves this pie; my meat loving father, my hungry brother and my picky kids. While your add it double the and put one pie in the freezer.
